With this information the device can recognize even the smallest movements of the body, such as the blink of an eye, and convert them into a range of sounds, which are then reproduced via a pair of white Genelec 8020D active studio loudspeakers.

The resulting MotionComposer 3.0 is based on passive stereovision – featuring two cameras but no laser or IR projector – to understand the positioning of a human body in a 3D environment. Years of development and workshops followed to refine the concept into something that would be simple to set up and use, allowing therapists to focus on their work, not the technicalities. This led to the concept of a device that would let everyone, regardless of ability, control sounds through movement. The roots of MotionComposer stretch back to 2010 when Wechsler – a choreographer and interactive dance pioneer – was contacted by Alicia Peñalba, a Spanish music therapist with the idea of working with disabled children. NATICK, MA, ApCreated by Robert Wechsler in collaboration with therapists, artists and people with other abilities, MotionComposer is an artistic and therapeutic tool that turns motion into music – and the company has recently chosen Genelec loudspeakers to partner its revolutionary new technology. Bergsland has also been involved in compositions for exhibitions, installations, large scale multi-media events, in addition to doing live-electronics performances and working with computer instrument design for motion capture systems.Genelec helps MotionComposer turn movement into music Bergsland then received a 4-year research fellow position, culminating in a PhD entitled “Experiencing voices in Electroacoustic Music”. After working as a school principal for 4 years, he developed an interest in electroacoustic music. Bergsland studied Musicology at NTNU with jazz bass as his instrument. He has written numerous articles on dance and technology and is co-author of the book, "Assistive Technologies, Disability Informatics and Computer Access for Motion Limitations" and lives now in Weimar, Germany where he directs the MotionComposer project.Ībout Andreas Bergsland: Andreas BergslandĪndreas is a post doctoral researcher at Norwegian University of Science and Technology with a project entitled “Live-electronics in a performativity perspective”. He was also a Fullbright fellow and, together with Palindrome, won first prize at the Berlin Transmediale for "best interactive art" in 2002.

Together with colleagues ( ), we have developed a new hardware/software device for persons with disabilities called the MotionComposer and in the process, we have created a number of interactive dance pieces for non-disabled professional dancers. Our approach to human machine interface champions intuitiveness and transparency (clear causality) in the interactive relationship and differs in some important ways from the more common skeleton extraction and gesture recognition approaches, particularly as they concern kinesthesia, synaesthesia and the perception of sound and music.
